Live, Work & Play In
Hamilton, Montana

The Bitterroot Valley was once home to the Bitterroot Salish Indian Tribe. In 1877, the tribe passed through Ravalli County on their way to Canada in order to avoid confinement to a reservation.

Hamilton was founded in 1890 by Marcus Daly, a wealthy businessman who made his fortunes in the copper mines of Montana. The town was incorporated in 1894 and was named after James Hamilton, an employee of Daly, who platted the town along the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Average high temperatures in Hamilton climb to 83 degrees Fahrenheit in July and average lows fall to 16 degrees in January. Hamilton averages 13.1 inches of precipitation each year and about 46.5 inches of snow.

Four public schools and one private school offer educational options to area students. The nearest institution of higher education is the University of Montana - Missoula, which is 60 miles away. Alternatives within 2 hours of town include the University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College.

Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital serves local health care needs.

Just to the west of the Bitterroot Valley, visitors and residents alike can explore vast areas of wilderness that host pristine forests and an impressive selection of native wildlife. The Bitterroot River runs through the valley, and it is lined with hiking trails and picnic areas. The wildlife and river have made hunting and fishing popular activities around Hamilton. You can hunt elk, deer, bear and mountain lion. The river is home to largemouth bass, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and northern pike.

Hamilton Golf Club was established in 1924 on land once owned by Marcus Daly. This public course has 18 holes spanning 6,545 yards with a par of 72. Golfers of all skill levels will find a pleasant challenge here.
